The Scheme
A four-acre masterplan of workplace and homes, built out over eight years around a retained goods shed.
The site was a repair yard: one long north-lit shed, a turning circle, and four acres of sidings. Rather than clear it, the masterplan keeps the shed as the centre of the scheme and arranges everything else around it — workplace on the western edge where the plots are deep, homes to the east where they are not.
The shed itself is now the public building of the quarter, re-roofed in glass and steel and left otherwise alone. It is the reason the masterplan has a middle, and it cost roughly what two floors of lettable area would have returned.
